navettes : A nice little biscuit, highly thought of here,
they're sold in almost all the boulangeries (baker), but there's only one
real navette baker and that's the Four des Navettes, 136, rue Sainte 13007,
tel 04 91 33 32 12 or their internet
site, though in French
bouillabaisse : is a bit like a fish soup (with whole
fish). It's was made from the unsold fish of the day's catch. It varies
from restaurant to restaurant.
santons : Little ornaments, sold most at christmas time,
they represent the sheperd, Mary, Jesus, but in Provence you can buy any
kind of figurine, you can have windmills, farmhouses and the people who
live in them. They're normally made out of clay and are hand painted. In
recent years they've started making non-painted figurines so that you can
have a go yourself.. You're supposed to place the "creche" (natavity) under
the christmas tree.
The regular size of each person is about 10cm, plus the stable. There
are shops that sell them all year or you must go to the santons fair at
the top of the Canebiere just before christmas.
La Petanque : a wonderfully skilled
game of ball throwing, like boules.
Savon de Marseille : Marseille soap, used all over France,
a real old timer. You can buy it anywhere but you should visit the Compagnie
de Provence, 1 rue Caisserie, 13001.
