If you really want to become Marseillais then you have to learn how to play petanque. It's a bit like boules exept that you're not allowed to move your feet, that would be too tiring. You'll find open sandy areas dotted around Marseille, during the day it's full of wait for it, only men, I believe that women are allowed to play but have never seen one.
After a long day on the Petanque field 6-10 meters² you all trundle off to drink your pastis (anaseed flavoured drink, that turns yellow when you mix it with water), in the shade of a big old plane tree (platane), there's thousands of them here. You'll argue about the capacities of the winners, and decide that tommorrow he'll have less luck, because it could only be down to luck that he won today.

Never be in a hurry for anything, especially shopping, talk to your fellow queuers, and don't be surprised if you get their life story during your 20 minutes wait. However if you arrive at the till and there's people standing around, your not quite sure where to stand, you must ask who's the last person, they can get quite offended if they think your trying to jump. If you have alot of shopping it's custom to let people with one or two items infront (they will ask, normally).

You'll also have to buy a football shirt (OM, of course). If you don't want to pay out for the shirt then you must at least have the scarf. It's good to learn the names of all the players, and when the important matches are, go down to your local cafe (men usually) and watch the match with the regulars.

Learn to drive like a Marseillais, it isn't easy, but with a little practice you'll get there, just don't get caught.
