Look, look and look again. It's not easy here. There's a big unemployment problem, however English mother tongue people can always go into teaching English with one of the many schools here, you don't always need the TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) but you will have to brush up on your grammar, it's not as easy as you think to teach English, plus it depends on the kind of students you have. You can try for restaurant work (you'll need do speak some french), in one of the pubs or Hotels, and there's also Marks and Spencers in the main shopping street, rue St-Ferreol.

The job center here is a total catastrophie. If your comming to Marseille to live, and you haven't got a job before you arrive then it's best to go to your local job center (ANPE) to inscribe, quite painless but you may be sent all over Marseille to fill in forms, etc. That is to be expected.

Working papers : I'm not quite sure what happens if you arrive without working papers, yes even English need what's called a "carte de sejour", you are alowed to work here for 3 months without one, Americans, as they surely know need visas, etc. You can get all the papers you need from the Prefecture de Marseille. You'll need what's called a "fiche d'etat civile" it basically states what your name is and when you were born. You may be able to get it from your Marie (local town hall) or just go to the British Embassy, 24 avenue du Prado, M° Castellane. It'll cost you 120 Francs.

Where to look : The local newspaper is called the "Provence" there's jobs every day and they're all grouped in the Saturday's edition. The Provence has their own internet site but there's no adverts in it.  Free newspapers are the 13 and the 7 you can pick them both up in the rue St-Ferreol (Canebiere side). Or you may find more artistic jobs, acting, etc.. in the Taktik newspaper.
